No need to remove the hook from the winch cable - slide the cable through the opening provided in the metal sleeve and rubber bumper, then squeeze all three parts together

Prevents the cable from breaking by stopping the hook before it reaches the roller fairlead

Also stops rattling noises by keeping the cable nice and tight
